Sunlight Counselling: Finding Light in Every Season
Why “Sunlight” Counselling?
Sunlight has always been special to me. As a teen, I spent hours photographing sunrises and sunsets, completely captivated by their colors and the way the sky seemed to shift every second. There’s something about the warmth and glow of the sun that has always felt comforting, energizing, and full of possibility.
At camp, I was given the nickname “Sunshine.” My bedroom was once covered in sunflowers—a reflection of just how much I love the sun’s presence. But beyond my appreciation for its beauty, I’ve also come to understand how deeply I rely on sunlight for my well-being. As someone who has struggled with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), I’ve learned the importance of making time for natural light, using a SAD lamp, and embracing the outdoors whenever I can. Gardening has reinforced this connection even more—watching tiny sprouts push through the soil, reaching for the sun, never fails to amaze me.
What Does Sunlight Represent?
Sunlight is more than just brightness—it’s a powerful metaphor for healing and growth. In my work as a counsellor, I often think about what sunlight symbolizes:
Clarity and Contrast – Sunlight brings things into focus, making what was once blurry or hidden more visible. Therapy can do the same—helping us gain insight into our thoughts, emotions, and patterns.
Light in the Darkness – Even on difficult days, sunlight still exists. It doesn’t erase the hard things, but it reminds us that light and darkness can exist together.
Warmth and Comfort – Just like sunlight can feel like a hug on a chilly day, connection and understanding in therapy can provide the same kind of warmth and support.
Growth – Just as plants lean toward the sun, we grow when we take care of ourselves. Healing takes time, patience, and the right conditions to thrive.
Revealing What’s Hidden – Sunlight has a way of exposing dust in a room—things we might not have noticed before. In therapy, this can mean bringing hidden emotions, beliefs, or patterns into the light so they can be understood and worked through.
Apricity – This beautiful word describes the warmth of the sun on a cold day. It’s a reminder that even in life’s hardest seasons, moments of warmth and hope can still find us.
At Sunlight Counselling, my goal is to create a space where you can nurture your well-being, illuminate new possibilities, and grow through life’s challenges. Whether you're navigating uncertainty, seeking clarity, or simply needing a little extra support, I’m here to walk alongside you as you move forward—one step at a time.
